Exit Visas

The khurooji you need to leave Iran as a permit-holder — the types of exit visa, how to apply, validity periods and cost.

Exit visas (khurooji) are needed when a foreigner holding a residence permit wishes to leave the country, whether temporarily or permanently. They ensure the individual has settled any legal or financial obligations before departure. This is a concept many Westerners are unfamiliar with, being used to leaving their home countries without prior approval from any authority — so understanding the process is essential for a smooth departure.

Types of exit visa

Exit and re-entry visa. This allows foreign residents to leave Iran temporarily and return without reapplying for a new entry visa. It is issued to students and their families who plan to travel abroad for short periods and return to continue their stay. There are two kinds:

  • Single-entry exit visa — allows you to exit Iran once. To leave again, you must apply for another exit visa.
  • Multiple-entry exit visa — permits you to leave and re-enter Iran multiple times within the visa’s validity period.

One-way exit visa. Intended for those leaving Iran permanently — students who have completed their studies, or who are unable to continue, and do not intend to return. Unlike the exit and re-entry visa, it does not permit re-entry.

Application process

Applying involves several steps, including submitting documents and, in some cases, obtaining clearance from different authorities.

The first step is to get approval from the school’s Academic Affairs department — especially important if your travel falls during term time. Once this leave of absence is granted, submit an exit-visa application form and the accompanying documents to the school: the original passport and a copy of the current residence permit.

Processing times vary by circumstance and nationality but average 7–14 days. Apply well in advance of your planned departure to allow for any unforeseen delays.

Validity period

The exit visa is typically valid for one month from the date of issue, so you must leave the country within this 30-day window. Failing to do so means reapplying — with additional fees and procedures.

Watch the return date. Once you have an exit visa, permit-holders can stay outside Iran for up to three or six months, depending on the terms of the visa. The validity dates and the date by which you must return are normally shown in the Persian calendar — pay careful attention so you and your family re-enter within the stipulated time and avoid having to reapply for a new entry visa.

Cost

The cost of an exit visa is less than $1, though policies differ between schools — some waive the fee altogether. Check the latest fees with your school’s administration.
